A History - The Woodlands Township

The vision of George Mitchell

About The Woodlands Texas Township

Beginning with an original purchase of 50,000 acres (@ $125.00 per, of timberland in 1963, George Mitchell would eventually create “The Woodlands”. The origins about The Woodlands Texas Township is little vague at this time due to disagreeing resources. The base story, George Mitchell bought 50,000 acres of timberland, which was managed quite well by the Grogan Cochran Lumber Company, and just over half of the property would become The Woodlands Township is accurate. It’s just the timeline between 1963 and 1974 seems a little distorted.

One resource suggested he had paid the land off by selling a small amount of timber each year, how long would that process require? Additionally, George was indirectly quoted ‘he did not initially plan to build out a residential area’. And yet another more reliable resource suggests he began to plan as early as 1966, which seems more likely to us, allowing for time for HUD funding and other requirements prior to beginning his new city. Initially, 2,800 acres was set aside for the burgeoning residential development of Grogan’s Mill which quickly grew to over 17,000 acres, and to the 28,000 it is now. Home to more than 114,532 residents (2020), the master-planned community has become a dining, retail and entertainment epicenter dominated by the oil, gas, and health care industries.

The Grand Opening Ceremony – The Woodlands

At 9:30 am on Saturday, October 19, 1974, a flag was raised at The Woodlands’ Information Center, then located The Woodlands Resort and Conference Center, in the Village of Grogan’s Mill. This event marked the first official act of The Woodlands’ introduction to the world. At the time fewer than 40 people lived in Settler’s Corner, the community’s original residential area, on South Millbend, just east of Grogan’s Mill road. These were truly pioneers – investors and believers in a new lifestyle, a planned community that was the dream-child of Mr. George Mitchell. According to the newest owner & publicly traded Howard Hughes Corp, 1,372 acres of unsold residential land, representing 4,532 lots, and 936 acres of commercial land remained available in 2011.
