South Branch Library first opened in 1976, and its first designated building was completed in 1978. After this building was destroyed by arson in 1992, the branch continued to operate in a temporary space until a new construction could be completed. The South Regional Library you see today opened to the public in the summer of 1994, and today serves more than 75,000 cardholders.

Due to the growing demands on the South Regional Library, a new branch in the western area of The Woodlands was approved. The George & Cynthia Woods Mitchell Library opened to the public in the summer of 2005, and today serves more than 35,000 cardholders.
